ODE TO CHILDHOOD

ODE TO CHILDHOOD

This video was for the Fall 2021 Edition of The Fray Magazine at Wesleyan University. The theme was Carnival/Bacchanalia. Below is the description that came along with it.

“Carnival” has two definitions:

  1. a period of public revelry at a regular time each year, typically during the week before Lent in Roman Catholic countries, involving processions, music, dancing, and the use of masquerade.

  2. a traveling amusement show or circus.

I tried to encapsulate both of these definitions in my video.  When thinking back on memories of childhood, everything felt like a sort of Carnival.  We created our own little worlds with just our imaginations, we created fairy homes out of sticks and mushroom tops, our greatest worries consisted of finding a good hiding spot before someone reached the end of their countdown in hide-and-seek; everything felt so free.  However, as time goes on and we mature, we lose this ethereal haze that coats our lives during our youth.  Our past is often viewed through self-imposed rosy retrospectives, leaving our memories stained with surreality.  The styling in this video is meant to represent the seraphic, bittersweet nature that comes along with the memories we hold.  The aim of this video is to encapsulate the feeling of childhood one more time.
